Movie Review : After the highly-celebrated success of ‘My Name is Khan’, Karan Johar is back with his much-awaited and eagerly anticipated film, ‘We Are Family’. Apparently a desi version of the 1998 Chric Columbus’ Hollywood movie ‘Stepmom’, the movie stars Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal as the protagonists. Directed by newcomer Sidharth P. Malhotra, the movie has been produced by Karan Johar under the banner Dharma Productions and Sony Pictures. The lyrics have been written by Irshad Kamil and Anvita Dutt Guptan, while the renowned music-director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has composed the music. ‘We Are Family’ is set for a 10th September, 2010 release.

Kajol essays the role of Susan Sarandon as Maya, while Arjun Rampal plays Ed Harris as Aman and Kareena Kapoor as the fun-loving Shreya, portraying Julia Roberts. ‘We Are Family’ revolves around a perfect family with a mother, dad and three kids, Aleya (Aanchal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg) and Anjali (Diya Sonecha). Then, what’s missing? Maya and Aman are divorced, but they make sure that the kids are well-looked after. Hence, they continue to live together to constitute a happy family unit. Enters Shreya, a career-oriented and highly ambitious woman, as Aman’s girlfriend, who en-routes the situation to a completely different road. Maya has been diagnosed with cancer and has no option, but to accept Shreya in her family as the stepmother.

Helpless, Maya has to confide to Shreya about her ill health, regardless of their varied differences. With the two women under the same roof, can they get out of this unusual situation? Will Shreya be ever able to learn the aspects of a family and children? Can two mothers make a home? With the three lead characters making a perfect trio, we can hope to see some fire on the screen. Let’s wait till 10th September, 2010 and see whether Maya will be successful in completing her family and proudly say ‘We Are Family’.

When I was a kid and a “young adult”, John Marsden was the king. He wrote some of the most read and acclaimed Australian books of my life and many of his books live on the enormous bookshelves at my parents’ house [and I keep his book "Everything I Know About Writing" at my house, just in case I need it].

Tomorrow When The War Began, since its release, has sold between 2 and 3 million copies in Australia alone and has been translated into at least 5 other languages.It always seemed of the books I read as a kid, this would be the one to become a movie – but to say I was apprehensive about the idea would be an understatement. Books inherently have to be changed to become movies, and sometimes that can mean are bastardised, cut short or that they simply don’t live up to their potential.

It’s lucky for everyone then that this movie is really good!
I won’t go into the plot here, but those that have read the book will find that it sticks reasonably close to the source material, even using some of the best lines from the book in the script. And luckily for the cinematographer and set designer Marsden actually used real places for his settings in the book [with different names of course] so the backdrops are pretty much exactly what the book describes.

The film is artfully shot, although at times may feel like a Tourism Australia advert with all the long sweeping shots of the Australian landscape. It can be forgiven for this though not only because it really does look beautiful, but also because they are obviously hoping this film will sell overseas and will entice tourists.

The acting was great from the relatively unknown cast, and each character seemed to feel exactly how they did in the book. Caitlin Stasey who plays Ellie seemed to take a little while in the first act to “get into” the character, but it got better and it feels as though all the actors will grow into their roles. [Another minor issue with Ellie was I felt Stasey had a bit too much makeup on for the character, but others may not care/notice].Some of the special effects in the film seem a little cheap, but that is simply because they were. By Hollywood standards this wasn’t made for much money, and they obviously did the best they could with the funds available. It was also good to see they used a Sydney based FX company for them.

My only major problem with the film, and it is a very slight one I suppose, was after the final scene had played and the audience was feeling that rush of “I can’t wait till the next one” some action credits played that seemed to be incredibly cliché and I felt ruined the end of the film. But all the problems I had with the film were very minor, and are more simply critiques in the hope that the sequels [when/if they are made] can excel.It may not carry the feeling of nostalgia that I had for viewers who have not read the books, but it is a solid story about young people making the best of things while learning their way in the world and learning to deal with the horrors surrounding them

Movie Review: Madholal…Keep Walking; Star cast: Subrat Dutta, Neela Gokhale, Pranay Narayan and Swara Bhaskara; Director: Jai Tank; Rating: 2 out of 5.The ‘chawl’ culture of Mumbai has never been too far from Hindi cinema. From Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Piya Ka Ghar’ to Sanjay Jha’s ‘Pran Jaye Par Chawl Na Jaye’ to Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘City Of Gold’ and Chandan Arora’s ‘Striker’, many gripping tales of resilience and kinship have been put on screen with no trace of self pity or anger in the underprivileged characters who go about their lives with dignity, optimism and humor even after queuing up for an hour to get into the dingy public toilet.

‘Madholal…Keep Walking’ is a well intended look at people we know from the chawls even if we’ve never been to one. The conversation among the characters is authentic. But the sad part is, these characters don’t seem to be saying anything that interests anyone apart from the characters who speak mundane matters acquires a certain engaging quality on screen only when ordinariness is treated with extraordinary empathy. This was the case recently with Irfan Kamal’s ‘Thanks, Maa’ where one slum kid’s quest for a mother made all the routine characters assume a life beyond their appointed ennui.

In ‘Madholal…’ The plot and dialogues create no interest in the characters. For half the film we grow familiar with the hand to mouth world of the the protagonist Madholal (Subrat Dutta) his family of loving wife and two daughters and his circle of friends with whom he commutes by train every day. The conversation among the friends is essentially about sex or the lack of it.One can’t but recall with pleasure and warmth the middle class ladies traveling to and fro in the local trains of Mumbai in the soap ‘Ladies Special’. Not one of the characters traveling with Madholal in these crowded trains appears interesting enough to meet, let alone take home.

Midway through the flat narration there’s a bomb blast on a train. The lives of the people who populate the film are turned around. Madholal, we are happy to know, keeps walking. There are some purposely poignant and emotional highpoints in the story that touch you with their sincerity in the second half. Actor Purba Dutta who plays Madholal conveys a profound anguish and helplessness in the second half. His train journey at the end when he comes to terms with his changed circumstances in life is a measure of the resilience that Mumbai’s middleclass epitomizes.

Sadly the film never quite takes off. The plot is too blunt about its noble intentions to convey the grief of common people caught in the downside of terrorism. This look at Mumbai’s undying spirit is like a Village Mela after closing time. If ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was Mumbai on steroids, ‘Madholal …Keep Walking’ takes the lives from a chawl on a lifeless journey.

Vilai - Movie Review : Director Kamaraj has tried his hand at serving a strong message in ‘Vilai’, which is about innocent women being exploited and pushed to flesh trade. Thankfully the film maker doesn’t stretch for effort here showing the dark sides, but he has tried to narrate a sequence of events to convey the theme. The movie has some familiar names like Saravanan, Udhayathara and ‘Nadodigal’ fame Barani. What begins as a docu-drama suddenly changes gears to become a routine clichéd affair. The intention of the director seems to be right, but he falters at its execution. Events unfold at quick pace and at places defy logic, taking away all sheen.Nandhu (Barani) and his sister Vandhana (Reethu Soni) live at Melur village with their parents. They quarrel with each other. Unable to tolerate it, their father arranges for Vandhana’s wedding. Her brother however wants her to continue studies as she is a topper.

Vandhana comes with Nandhu to Chennai. She gets kidnapped by a call taxi driver and Nandhu begins his search only to come to know that she has been kidnapped by a gang running flesh trade. Now Nandhu takes the help of Assistant Commissioner of Police Shanmugavel (Saravanan), who had a bad past and had his young daughter kidnapped a few years ago.He along with Nandhu goes on search and succeeds in finding her in the custody of a Mirchi Maya (Fathima), a dreaded woman don who runs prostitution houses in Andhra Pradesh. But there awaits a surprise for Shanmugavel. Also how Vandhana is saved is the rest.

Saravanan reminds one of Vijayakanth. He replicates the ‘Captain’ in his walk and mannerisms. Barani plays a desperate brother, while Reethu Soni as Vandhana is cute. The rest of the cast includes ‘Yogi’ Devaraj, Chandru and Amarasigamani among others.The content was there to give a riveting film. But Kamaraj seems to have achieved only in parts. On the whole, the movie doesn’t work wonders. However the director deserves pat for taking a relevant issue and discussing it.

This film is just another addition to the list of Kannada films. Bad luck continues for good looking hero Mayoor Patel. The making of this film is very poor, the narration deserved to be much better in the first half and post interval is very weak in contents as everything is expected.

Director Jayanth has not taken care of his brother Sathyanarayana’s production. Holding the audience attention is prime factor today and that is missing in this film.Shivu (Mayoor) living in the village is the backbone of his family. His father played by Avinash is the village head has extreme hope on his son. But Shivu is Kiran at the interval point when he arrives in a hospital for his father’s treatment.

Shivu who is Kiran to his friends is taken to a far off place. Shivu is suffering from Amnesia. In the last one year what has happened to him in the village is only in his memory. The friends try hard to get back the memory for Shivu and succeed. As Kiran while helping a friend Mohan he was locked in the murder of a politician. Now it is time for Kiran to unearth the real murderer.Mayoor looks good on the screen and he needed some good dialogues to at least thrill the front benchers. Deepika as heroine is not up to the mark. Avinash is as usual good in his role. Adhi Lokesh has lost his vigor of villain.Cinematography and music are substandard.

Neeyum Naanum Tamil Movie Review : Director Solairaja, who made many a popular serial on small screen, has tested waters in the tinsel town with a film that speaks about the egos, friendship and camaraderie among children.Set in the backdrop of a dance competition between students, the movie harps about the innocence of children, their agony and frustration.
Though Solairaja has tried his hand at such an interesting theme, what the movie lacks is the way the director has executed it. It sounds clichéd and predictable at many places.Sanjeev of ‘Kulir 100 Degree’ plays the lead role while debutant Chetna is cast as his ladylove. The film boasts of star cast that includes Sampath Kumar, Master Rinson, Master Sachin, Singamuthu, Nellai Siva and Manobala among others.The movie begins in a school campus where Surya (Sanjeev) comes to join as aerobics instructor. The school is owned by Sampath (Sampath Kumar), the chairman of a group of educational institutions, and an influential man in town.


Surya develops affinity with Diya (Chetna), a relative of Sampath who is also a dance teacher there. Meanwhile, a poor boy Karthick (Rinson) manages to get admission in the school thanks to Surya.An intelligent boy, he incurs the wrath of Siddharth (Sachin), son of chairman of the school who studies in the same class. Karthik's mother falls sick and he needs Rs. Five lakh to do surgery for her. Comes a dance contest carrying cash award of Rs 10 lakh which Karthik wants to do. Siddharth comes in between and poses hurdles.
Eventually with Surya's help Karthik gets admitted to another school. Surya, Karthi and others take it as challenge and prepare themselves for the competition. Meanwhile Diya walks out from the house to be with Surya. It’s finals between Siddharth and Karthik and the best wins.

The movie boasts of enough dance sequences. There are some fun elements in the form of children getting ready for dance contests. Sanjeev looks cool and suave while Chetna is okay. Sampathraj as usual does his job well. All the kids have played well.
Music by Sriram Vijay is good especially the theme music. Premshankar's cinematography is breezy. All said ‘Neeyum Nanum’ is like watching a dance contest on a television channel which impresses you in parts.

Happy Happy Ga Movie Review : Give away millions to anyone who’d promise to find a single bright spot in the supposedly happy film ‘Happy Happy Ga’. Varun Sandesh is on a talkathon`right from the word go. If you wish for a break from his tiring smiles and monologues, you are treated to a endless nonsense from Ali..to put it in short it’s like jumping from frying pan into the fire. The hero Santosh leads a team called the Cartoon Guys who are into a business of making people Happy but sadly the story is such that it would make the most gregarious of cartoons sad. Santosh has a habit of flirting but when he seriously falls for Pooja, he’s in for a shock. She prefers to be just friends. The lady who’s returned from the US has nothing better to do so, she takes up the onus of finding the dream woman in Santosh’s life. Santosh points out at a lady and says that she’s the person he’s in love with and there moves the story.

Pooja carries all his love letters to Priya, the stranger and she has fallen in love with him almost immediately. The rest of the film is how Pooja plays a glorified broker’s job and in the process begins to feel love for the hero. The hero is in a role conflict, to reveal all. Another angle to this love story is the Priya’s brother is a baddie and he wants to see his sister happy so compels the hero to love her (sic) as she will soon die (she suffers from an ailment). Now to know if Priya dies or not, if she gets Santosh or Pooja does..one has to sit through the second part of the film. The director Priya Saran has handled the film in an absolutely juvenile manner. Shabby cinematography, the plot and treatment gives it a third grade look. Varun Sandesh’s non stop prattle is not amusing especially when he pronounces Taj Mahal as Taj Mahaal. The entire film has him smile constantly and when the situation demands that he needs to look sad, in the last scene, he fails to deliver the right expression making a mockery of the entire story. Is Vega blinded by too much light or is she opening or closing her eyes is something that needs to be unraveled. Saranya Mohan does a convincing job. About Rajitha, MS Naryana..the less said the better. An excruciating experience this!

Story:
There is nothing amazingly new about the story of Happy Happy Ga. The story of a young lover-boy Santosh played by Varun Sandesh falling in love with a girl and subsequently realizing that she does not love him seems like an age old story. The introduction of a third angle with Priya (Sharanya Mohan) brings in some twists and hope for the audience but in the melee of things even this hope is lost. Pooja played by Vega is Santosh's dream girl and all his efforts are to get her. The anti climax of the film is that even she is lost on him and the end is that he gets neither Pooja nor Priya. At the end Santosh aptly says that he would like to live his future in his dreams thinking about his past. A really sad ending for a film called Happy Happy Ga.

Gudu Gudu Gunjam Movie Review:Gudu Gudu Gunjam is an exercise in desperation for Dr. Rajendra Prasad, if he keeps working in a stinker like this he will have to cite Aa Naluguru as his best film throughout his life. Worse than a C grade movie, one can make a better two and a half hour visual with a handycam. This is a perfect example of how any ambitious amateur can start off a movie with five songs and few comedians who are dressed and coiffured like junior artistes.

So what is Gudu Gudu Gunjam about? A mother who dotes on her son and uses her henpecked husband a criminal lawyer for her whims and fancies. The son is absconding one fine day and he is now in Bangkok ogling at women scantily dressed coming out of the beach. The problem arises when the debutant hero who runs high on hormones smooches Telangana Sakuntala's daughter. The mother is baying for his blood and in between the hero is seriously romancing another starlet. To relieve you from this stress is Brahmanandam who makes a mockery of himself by dancing to Ek Niranjan number. There is only one reason why one should watch the film..to know why Chiranjeevi is THE best in Telugu cinema and why he is such a graceful dancer. His song 'Nee Meeda Naaku Idayyo' is used and Paardhu needs to just copy his steps but what does he do? Perform like a newcomer in an aerobics class.

Krishna Bhagwan brings a story to Rajendra Prasad and the latter asks him, "Oka story raasthe writer aipothara?" The reply is, "Mari nuvvo oka kodukuni kante father aipothava?” Hmmm..There is an urgent need for the director to come out of these silly Gudu Gudu Gunjam games and do some soul searching before hunting for scripts.

One look at the trailer and we can see Ravi Varman's work at his best. Every frame and even the characters look refreshing.

Story - Gumshuda:-Anisha, an attractive young lady in her thirties, is astounded to find that someone is sending her a series of diamonds by courier. Her father, Captain Mehta, had disappeared some years back and the letter accompanying the diamonds hints at some link between her father and the diamonds…The diamonds lead the intrepid Anisha, a night club singer by profession, to the idiosyncratic private detective, Prashant Saigal and his associate, Dr. Arvind Rao: a criminological expert with an eye for the beautiful things in life!

The trio of Prashant, Arvind and Anisha reach the house of the man who was sending the diamonds, namely, the ultra stylish Goutam Dutt. He tells them the intriguing tale of the Agra treasure, a collection of highly priced jewels that had its origin some 150 years back and which disappeared nearly 40 years back…

The search for the treasure and for the truth behind Captain Mehta's death leads the trio to Shillong, to the house built by Colonel Dutt, the father of Goutam Dutt. The colonel had died in a strange paroxysm of fear upon seeing a ferocious face at the window… Saigal and Arvind stumble upon a series of murders including that of Siddharth Dutt, Goutam Dutt's brother, mercilessly annihilated by a poisonous dart – the last in a series of killings that began with the butchering of the merchant Achmet, at Agra, some forty years ago… It was Achmet who had been entrusted with the Agra treasure by the Maharaja of Sitamgarh.

Prashant, who has a great liking for single malt whiskeys, gradually unravels the mystery, aided by his own hallucinations and dreams. His research, coupled by his own subconscious, leads him to the mysterious and malevolent Jalaluddin who is the prime suspect in the Siddharth murder case. In the course of the adventure, Anisha's traumas and uncertainties throw her close to the disarming Arvind, who often has to face the ire of the short tempered Prashant.

Meandering along a path full of strange sulphurous fires and labyrinthine corridors, Prashant and Arvind engage in a cat and mouse game with the one legged Jalal. This culminates in an incredibly complex chase on the Badapani River, a massive water body surrounded by mountains. The final confrontation between Prashant and Jalaluddin takes place on the high seas with the mythical treasure ever remaining cloaked in historical mystery, even as a shaken Anisha tries to assimilate the nuances of this dream like sojourn…

Music Review : Gandu makkalu cruises smoothly enough with its foot-tapping, but oft-repeated tune, except when it stumbles upon childish interludes. Dilkhush is a lovely melody; very catchy, with simple, lovely arrangements, while the mildly-Black Eyed Peas’ish Boom boom pa merely passes muster. Inthi ninna preethiya is sweet, but very stale as far as the melody goes, while veteran SPB rocks Anthara heegeke, clearly inspired by Andy Williams’ Where do I begin! Passable soundtrack from Harikrishna – he continues to not have his own style and passes off as a blend of many other composers from Kannada. Wonder how long this method will last!

Nee ondrum is a tad simplistic but endearing nonetheless and Aanum pennum’s fast-paced rhythms and sophistication in the orchestration work pretty well. Graamam thedi emulates Rahman’s sound, but Thaman carefully crafts the track with adequate individuality and creates a winner, while in Adhikaalai pookkal the young composer ups the ante significantly with enchanting backgrounds and a tune that beautifully build itself as it progresses. Gore gore, reused from Thaman’s Telugu soundtrack, Kick, is catchy but standard fare. Then mutham plays out like a Harris Jeyaraj song and impresses with its orchestration. Young Thaman is gradually, but surely making his mark.
